Aims, contents and method of the course
Aims, contents and method of the courseEast Asia is one of the most dynamic regions of the world for economic development. At the same time, it is a place of tense power competition and a region of territorial disputes and security dilemmas. Hot wars in the past left a heavy record and heritage for present and future. Cold peace at present time with escalated conflicts pose great challenges to security and stability in the region. Both historical and present events deserve an in-depth analysis and study. This course will offer students an opportunity to require some knowledge and access to academic research in the field of International Relations in East Asia, to ponder over the issues concerning security situation, regional mechanism and crisis management as well as war and peace in the region.This course will deal with some of the most important events of the last decades in the international relations, the bilateral and multilateral mechanism in the region.A great deal of primary and secondary literature will be given and studied: The verbatim records and resolutions of the United Nations and other multilateral framework as well as academic publications will be reviewed.The course will be conducted in the form of a combination of lecture, presentation and group discussion by the students. Presentation topic for the next course will be given at the end of a course. The group discussion could mimic the actual discussion in the multilateral fora like the United Nations, ASEAN and ARF, Northeast Asia Security Dialogue, etc. The students should assume the roles of the representatives of specific countries in the multilateral discussion and negotiation. During the discussion, the students are required to suggest a solution to the conflict and issue under discussion.
Assessment and permitted materials
The students will be assessed through presentation, participation in the discussion,proposal to the solution of the issue, as well as a Seminar paper on a given topic at theend of the course. Participation in the 7 Seminars is mandatory.Composition of the final score:Seminar paper (15 - 20 pages): 60%;Presentation: 20%;Participation in discussion: 20%
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Examination topicsIn preparation of each unit, students are asked to read related book chapters or articles, provided by the lecturer and chosen by themselves. This will create a foundation for active discussion during the seminar. In addition, each student is required to actively contribute to at least two group presentations. This includes joint handouts with the key points on the assigned topic, and joint PPT presentations. Handouts and PPTs must be submitted electronically before the course begins. Details of the assignments are specified during the classes.The topic for the Seminar paper will be provided at the end of the last lecture. The paper should be handed in through email to the lecturer before 31.07.2017.
