Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This is the second part of a two-semester course designed to provide EcoS students with basic skills in the Japanese language as well as the tools to build on that on their own.

PREREQUISITES:
* advance registration
* the textbook (see below)
* Basic Japanese I for EcoS students, *WS 2014/15*
Technically, you do not need to have passed last semester in order to do this one, but you should at least have taken the course, because we'll continue right where we left off.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance is mandatory. (That goes double for the first lesson, as no-shows will have their registration revoked immediately.) In addition students should budget at least 20 hours per week of study time. The lessons will require preparation and active participation, there'll be regular homework -- to be submitted on time -- and multiple tests, written and oral.
Details will be announced at the start of the course.

There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

At the end of the second semester students should be able to
* communicate orally in various everyday situations
* understand basic spoken and written Japanese texts [the latter will require extensive use of dictionaries]
* read a few hundred of the most common kanji
* produce select kinds of written communication [with the help of a computer], e. g. e-mails
* expand on their knowledge of Japanese in self-study, using dictionaries, grammar references etc.

The course will also cover everything required to pass the language part of the StEOP exam for Japanese Studies majors, enabling students to take more advanced language courses, if they wish to specialise [some German req.].

Examination topics

Instruction will be split into two parts, one more theoretical, one more practical in nature. The first will focus on constructively building an understanding of Japanese grammar and vocabulary by way of Japanese-English translation; the second will have students put this understanding in active use, e. g. conversation, essay writing &c., guided by a native speaker.

Reading list

Textbook: Bunka shokyû nihongo I. Tekisuto. Kaiteiban. Available at Facultas bookshop in "Hof 1" on Campus. Most likely (part of) the second volume will also be required, but there is no need to buy it in advance.
Additional material will be distributed in class or via the e-learning platform.
