Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are the three most important Chinese-speaking societies. The three entities have forged distinct paths in political and economic development. Yet they share a common cultural heritage and are inter-connected through personal, economic and political ties. The societies manifest both unique characteristics and striking similarities. This lecture introduces central dimensions of social development and state-society relations in these societies, drawing on key insights of social scientific research on topics ranging from demography, social movements to political identities. By examining similarities and differences of observed societal outcomes against background conditions, students are encouraged to think critically about underlying mechanisms and the diversity of developmental paths among Chinese societies.

Assessment and permitted materials

The exam will consist of 20 single, multiple choice and open questions. Aids are not allowed. The first exam date is on 02.02.2024.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

You will pass the course if at least 60% of the maximum number of points for the written examination is achieved. Grades are awarded according to the following scheme:
100% -90% of the total number of points: Grade 1
89% -80% of the total number of points: grade 2
79% -70% of the total number of points: grade 3
69% -60% of the total number of points: grade 4
59% -0% of the total number of points: grade 5
