Assessment and permitted materials
Students are required to attend regularly; if more than three sessions are missed, the seminar will be considered failed. Additional components include a presentation, submission of a term paper, and active participation in the sessions.IMPORTANT: The rules of good scientific practice apply. According to the regulations of the University of Vienna, the submitted work can be subjected to a plagiarism check for control purposes (Turnitin). According to the Austrian University Act, "plagiarism [...] exists in any case if text passages, theories, hypotheses, findings or data are taken over and passed off as one's own without acknowledging the source or the author" (§ 51 Abs 2 Z 31 UG 2002, see also link of the Studienpräses to the definition of plagiarism:

In this seminar, you will learn how to systematically work on the state of research regarding state formation in the People's Republic of China and Taiwan with the help of so-called "AI tools." The goal of the seminar is twofold: first, to identify, organize, systematize, and summarize the academic literature on a key period in the Republic and People's Republic of China; and second, to develop a critical approach to AI tools, which are gaining increasing importance in academic research. Various technologies will be utilized, such as specialized language models, automated text analysis tools, and programs for analyzing citation networks. At the beginning of the seminar, participants will collaboratively identify AI-based tools that simplify the research and analysis process. In the next step, aspects of state formation processes will be identified and worked on in small groups. During the course of the seminar, each group will compile a systematic list of literature on their aspect and summarize the results in a seminar paper. Throughout the process, the groups will continuously exchange methods and results and provide feedback to each other.By the end of the seminar, students will be able to systematically analyze academic literature on a given topic, select, evaluate, and apply appropriate AI tools. They will develop competencies in dealing with machine learning technologies, enabling them to critically assess future technological developments in research and to evaluate both their potential and shortcomings.
