Aims, contents and method of the course
Current politics in Northeast Asia is as exciting and fascinating as it has been in the past decades. The long-lasting division of the Korean peninsula and territorial conflicts in the region continue to impact (and are nurtured by) domestic politics in China, Taiwan, Japan, South and North Korea. Although every country is unique, both formal and informal institutions of politics share some fundamental similarities. This course covers the relationships between executive, legislature and judiciary, i.e. government, parliament and courts, also taking into account the role of the head of state, as well as political parties. Since many political decisions are taken by government without recourse to parliament informal aspects of politics are also discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will be evaluated on basis of performance on assignments (presentations/group work: 35% and term paper: 45%) and participation in class (20%). Attendance is compulsory but not sufficient for a good participation grade.
Reading list
All assigned readings are required and they should be done prior to the respective classes. Most readings will be available electronically through Moodle.
