Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Positive grades (grade 4 or better) for all formal requirements as listed under “Assessment (Art der Leistungskontrolle)” are a minimum requirement for passing this course.
Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”). Repetition of individual assessment criteria, therefore, is not possible. The “Individual Presentation on Research Topic” counts as a minimum requirement (“Mindestanforderung”) and therefore must be passed in order to achieve an overall pass for the course.
• Deadline for submission of topic and selection of date for individual presentation: November 26, 22:00 via Moodle.
• The individual presentation [20 minutes] must provide an outlook of the student’s topic for the term paper for the seminar of Economic Systems in East Asia. Thus, it should include the following sections: relevance of topic, research question, highlights of the literature review, and the analytical framework.
• After each presentation, there will be a 10-minute feedback session from tutor and peers.
• Please upload your .ppt and handout the Monday before your presentation at 9:00 am latest.
• Unannounced (less than 48h in advance) absence on the day of your presentation results in an immediate fail of the presentation and the whole course.
• Each student must submit the feedback of two presentations of their choice (use form on Moodle). Deadline for each submission is the Thursday after the presentation (14:00 on Moodle). No submissions past this deadline accepted. For the “individual assessment of the topic” (19 October), students only need to attend for the time-slot they selected to discuss their research. In order to use the time efficiently, students must have a defined topic, a research question and a possible theoretical approach to discuss with the tutor.Active participation in discussions and class exercises is encouraged and expected from students. Bearing this in mind, regular attendance is mandatory with the following penalties applied to students who miss class sessions:
• Final grade will not be affected if the student is absent up to three class sessions (missing a double session will result in two absences)
• Four absences will result in the final grade being reduced by one full grade; fives absences will be reduced by two full grades. Students with more than five absences will fail the course. Please note: To ensure a smooth proceeding of the seminar, please be on time. Students who are late by more than 10 minutes will not be able to sign the attendance list. For double sessions, the lecturer will check attendance at the beginning of each session (first 10 minutes).During the first class, the lecturer will explain all minimum requirements and assessment criteria. By continuing this course, students accept all minimum requirements and assessment criteria. Attendance at the first class thus is mandatory. Absence at the first meeting will lead to automatic de-registration from this course.
