Aims, contents and method of the course

Thorough discussion of the following sections in each chapter: Kewen, Shengci, Zhushi, Yufa, and Lianxi (incl. Reading text). Within the section Lianxi we will select relevant exercises. Relevant chapters (subject to changes): Chapter 9 to 20 (Chapt. 19 and 20: only section Yufa). A preliminary list of planned chapters will be provided on Moodle.

Receptive knowledge of traditional characters.

Receptive knowledge of the two phonetic transcriptions Wade-Giles and Zhuyin Fuhao ("BoPoMoFo").

Traditional Radicals.

Additional vocabulary: Names of countries; weights and measures; specialized terminology: grammar.

Assessment and permitted materials

A) Participation and homework: 20%

- 3 written quizzes: vocabulary knowledge and character knowledge (for details see material provided on moodle).

- Being able to read texts in the textbook.

- Participation in activities provided on Moodle (e.g. discussion forum, Wiki, etc).

B) Mid-term Test: 30%

1) Translation from German into Chinese; 2) Translation from Chinese into German; 3) Theoretical knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary (e.g. Chinese technical terms for grammar structures).

C) Final Exam: 50%

1) Translation from German into Chinese; 2) Translation from Chinese into German; 3) Theoretical knowledge of Chinese grammar and vocabulary (e.g. Chinese technical terms for grammar structures); 4) Knowledge of traditional radicals.

!!!All parts of the Mid-term Test and Final Exam must be completed with more than 0%, otherwise the whole test is marked as "unsatisfactory"!!!

D) Quiz on the receptive knowledge of the transcriptions Wade-Giles and Zhuyin Fuhao ("BoPoMoFo").

A detailed explanation of the grading criteria as well as examples of the exam-formats will be provided on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Consolidation and enlargement of the Modern Chinese language competence (productive and receptive, written and oral) acquired in the first to third semesters.

This comprises:

1. Productive and receptive knowledge of vocabulary and grammar structures. The emphasis is on translation of German into Chinese. You will also acquire a certain meta-knowledge of the Chinese language which enables you to analyze grammatical phenomena theoretically and contrastively.

2. Understanding oral Chinese (receptive competence).

3. Reading of texts written in simplified or traditional characters.

4. Correct pronunciation and intonation.

5. Correct writing of simplified characters.

6. Knowledge of Chinese radicals (traditional list of Kangxi-Radicals).

7. Productive knowledge of Hanyu Pinyin, the official romanization system of the PRC, and receptive knowledge of the transcriptions Wade-Giles (older system) and Zhuyin Fuhao (used in Taiwan).

8. Productive knowledge of a selected number of foreign place-names (Hanyu Pinyin).

9. Productive knowledge of common weights and measures in Chinese (Hanyu Pinyin).

- Being able to read texts in the textbook.

- Participation in activities provided on Moodle (e.g. discussion forum, etc).

B) Mid-term Test: 30%

Dialogue (you recieve a certain theme and make a dialogue with your partner by using five sentences that have been listed in German. You need to have the ability to translate them into proper Chinese); 2) Chinese vocabulary and the use of them (e.g. make sentences with the words that have been listed).

C) Final Exam: 50%

A detailed explanation of the grading criteria as well as examples of the exam-formats will be provided on Moodle.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Consolidation and enlargement of the Modern Chinese language competence (productive and receptive, written and oral) acquired in the first to third semesters.

This comprises:

1. Productive and receptive knowledge of vocabulary and grammar structures. The emphasis is on using proper Chinese word to express yourself. You will also acquire a certain meta-knowledge of the Chinese language which enables you to analyze grammatical phenomena theoretically and contrastively.

2. Understanding oral Chinese (receptive competence).

3. Reading of texts written in simplified characters.

4. Correct pronunciation and intonation.

5. Productive knowledge of a selected number of foreign place-names (Hanyu Pinyin).

6. Productive knowledge of common weights and measures in Chinese (Hanyu Pinyin).

Examination topics

Detailed analysis of the grammar and vocabulary used in the texts. Special emphasis is on contrastive language analysis (e.g. explanations and examples of the use of vocabulary and phrases).

Translation exercises.

Classroom work; pair work (closed pairs and open pairs); group work.
