Aims, contents and method of the course

This course is a research seminar which is focused on the question of how to explain the Sino-Soviet rift at the beginning of the 1960's. In the past, the unexpected quarrel between the two big communist countries was mostly explained by differences in the understanding of Marxism-Leninism. Later on, China's nationalism was seen as the reason why the two countries developed their conflicts. Today, many researchers look at the two countries from a point ov view which goes beyond ideological differences looking at the two countries belonging to the Cold War system of international relations. Using recent findings of new materials, the class will compare and discuss the different approaches trying to identify their pro's and con's and to develop a maybe new an convincing explanation in light of the on-going rapprochment between China and Russia.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants are required to contribute to the seminar by choosing a topic to be presented either individually or as a member of a team. In addition, participants are required to submit an end term paper on a topic related to their presentation or otherwise on a related topic of their own choice.
Students who do not know Chinese will collaborate with students who know Chinese or will be asked to present on topics which do not require a command of the Chinese language.
If you decide to attend the course, but do not want to submit a term paper or present in class, this has to be brought to the attention of the professor before the Easter break.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Participants are required to attend class regularly. This implies that you are not supposed to miss class more than three times. Participation will be good for 30% of the final grade. The presentation will stand for another 30% and the end term paper for 40%. All three requirements have to be fulfilled in order to be graded positively.
