Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture covers problems of meaning in language applied to the case of Korean. We will investigate the various range of semantic phenomena as known in general linguistics and then address occurrences of these phenomena in the Korean language. By the end of the lecture the students will have a solid general idea of Korean semantics. This shall prove helpful to them for their further study of the language or as a general knowledge useful for other studies.

Lecture 1: Euimiron - The problem of meaning in the context of Korean language. Fundamental conceptual tools for understanding Korean semantics. Types of 'meaning' (central jungsimjeok vs. peripheral jubyeonjeok, extentional woeyeonjeok vs. intentional naepojeok and other categories).
Lecture 2: Lexical meaning, relationship between meanings and related phenomena: multisemy polysemy. Korean peculiarities.
Lecture 3: Language and symbolism: Metaphor and Metonymy. How metaphors work in Korean.
Lecture 4: Word fields and extensions of meaning how Korean might have semantics of its own.
Lecture 5: Identifying grammatical semantics in Korean.
