The course is graded as follows:
* Homework (15%)
* Mini quiz x5 (3%x5 = total of 15%)
* Mid-term test (35%)
* Final test (35%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
More than 60 percentage points are required to pass the course
Components weighted as above and translated into grades as follows:
>90% Excellent (1/A)
>80% Good (2/B)
>70% Satisfactory (3/C)
>60% Acceptable (4/D)
<=60% Failed (F)* Minimum attendance is 80%.
* There is a strict zero tolerance policy on cheating and plagiarism.* First time attendance concludes the course application, which means the course will be graded (even if you stop attending the class mid semester and do not take any tests). You can deregister within the deadline.
Unexcused missing of the first lesson will result in an automatic deregistration and students on waiting lists will fill the newly opened spot automatically.
If you should not be able to attend the first lesson please contact the lecturer per email, you will be considered as excused and not automatically deregistered.

* 10-13 hours per week of additional study time for preparation, homework, assignments, etc.
* Students must be able to read Hiragana and Katakana and have basic writing abilities at the beginning of this course.At the end of this course students should:
* understand spoken standard Japanese in specific everyday situations
* participate and communicate in those situations
* read basic Japanese of familiar topics
