Aims, contents and method of the course

The Tian'anmen events of 1989 (suppression of the democracy movement) have become a pivotal turnaround in recent Chinese history. The idea of a profound democratization and liberalization of Chinese society (as experienced a few months later in communist Easter Europe) has failed. We will use photos, documentaries and available literature to analyze this movement, its slogans and backgrounds to acquire basic knowledge about the events and the debates.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presence in class is compulsory!
1. Home-works, participation in debates, regular presence - 20pc
2. A group presentation by ppt 30pc
3. An individual term paper 50pc

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Overall 55pc (group presentation: 45 minutes, term paper: 12.000 signs + a a list of consulted literature and sources)
