Aims, contents and method of the course

1.Goal
During the past two decades, with the limited opening of all levels of archives in China, more and more scholars have begun using archival materials for historical research. This course aims at introducing the foundational knowledge of China’s archival management system, equipping the students with basic skills of doing archival research in China.
2.Content
First, the historical development of China’s archival system and the current situation; second, the relationship between archives and historical research utilizing and challenges; third, interpreting
archives: breakthrough through details, database, and interdisciplinary approach.
3.Expectation
Basic understanding of China’s archival system and its contents; basic knowledge on the key issues within the field of contemporary Chinese history.

Assessment and permitted materials

Strongly recommend combining with Course II’s examination. If not, you can get your grade through doing homework by submitting commentaries on the materials the professor assigns.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Fail if missing class twice without reasonable excuses.
Class participation (20%)
Final project (80%)
