Aims, contents and method of the course

Historical evolution of the Chinese foreign relations since 1949; Important events in the history of Chinese diplomacy from the founding of the People's Republic of China to the present day; Evaluation of the events and their influence on the development of China's foreign policy concept.

Assessment and permitted materials

The final assessment will consist of three parts: group or individual preparation and presentation 25%; performance in class 20%; final exam 55%.The final exam will take place in the last week of the semester. The students have one week to write their papers on a given topic and shall hand them in at the last lecture time. Oral presentation, if necessary, is at the last lecture time.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The objective of this course is to let the students acquire some knowledge and research input about Chinese foreign relations from the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949 to the present day. The course is aimed at deepening the understanding of the students of the Chinese history and politics and it will serve further study and research in sinology, especially in the direction of foreign relations and foreign policy.

Examination topics

Students will form different groups or work individually. They will be given topics and/or reading material or reference books for the preparation of the presentation before the lectures. In class, students of one group shall present their reading and analysis of the content. After introduction from the teacher, time will be allocated for questions and answers as well as discussion. Every student should be prepared to answer questions on subjects under consideration and present his/her own views.
