The event will take place on site. In the first session (March 14), there will be a brief introduction to the research on rural Japan at the Institute. We will then identify the students' areas of interest, present the course schedule, and discuss the topic assignment for the following sessions.

Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Aso Study Group is a regular, informal, and interdisciplinary meeting of researchers, students, and those interested in research on rural Japan. This semester, the Study Group is also designed as a course in which, together with researchers at the Institute, both substantive and empirical approaches to the field will be discussed and taught. The course takes place every second Tuesday and lasts 90 minutes.

Participants have the opportunity to present on a topic from a range of current research topics at the Institute on Rural Japan or - if desired - to contribute with their own topics or research projects. At the same time, students can benefit from the feedback and experience of more advanced participants from different departments and institutions and gain insight into their current research.

Goals

- Promote methodological competence, familiarity with empirical methods.
- Discussion of approaches, research topics related to rural Japan in an interdisciplinary setting with Japan researchers from different institutions at different stages of their academic careers
- Improve knowldege communication and presentation skills

The course language is German. For English-speaking participants, individual sessions can also be held in English.

Assessment and permitted materials

- Oral presentation (alone or in pairs, depending on the number of participants)
- Written elaboration of own presentation topic (approx. 3-5 pages)
- Active participation in the discussions (incl. preparation of the reading for the respective session)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Presentation, elaboration, active participation. For a positive evaluation all partial performances must be fulfilled!
Attendance is compulsory (>80% attendance). Thus, one (out of seven) session can be missed without excuse. Attendance at the first session counts as taking the exam. If you sign out by March 31 (6pm), you will not be graded. Absence in the first session will result in automatic withdrawal from the course.
