Given the uncertainties surrounding public health and even university policy because of COVID-19, this class will use a flexible hybrid style of delivery. The class will begin online (week #1) during which we will review the syllabus and expectations of this course. Further instructions will then be provided, but students should expect some combination of online and in-person instruction. As such, students should be present in Vienna on days this course is held. For online classes, please ensure you have access to a computer or laptop with a stable internet connection and working microphone.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Note: This class will be capped at 25 students, with priority to those enrolled in the EcoS program. EcoS students must also enroll in the Political Systems in East Asia (SE 150138).

The primary objective of this course is to review basic components of social science research design and guide the writing of an academic research paper. Designed to reflect EcoS’ integrated teaching and learning concept, this exercise course (“Übung”) complements the seminar Political Systems in East Asia (SE 150138).

Students will do three things in this course. They are:

1. review key elements of research design in the social sciences;
2. explore empirical research methods, with a focus on comparative case study approaches; and
3. complete guided writing assignments for specific components of an academic research paper

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”). There are four graded components of this course (% of final grade):

1. Attendance and participation (10%)
2. Written component #1: Research proposal (25%)
3. Written component #2: Literature review (35%)
4. Written component #3: Data and methodology (30%)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Positive grades (grade 4 or better) for all formal requirements as listed under “Assessment (Art der Leistungskontrolle)” are a minimum requirement for passing this course.
Grading is based on a “continuous assessment of coursework” (“Prüfungsimmanente Lehrveranstaltung”).

The course is divided into two sections.

In section one, students will read about the principles of research design and types of empirical research. Specific focus will be devoted to certain qualitative research methods, namely the comparative case study design. Students will be assigned readings and must come to class prepared to discuss them.

The second section of the course will be dedicated to applying what was learned in the first section to a research project. Students will be required to write and present a basic research proposal. This will be followed by writing a literature review and will conclude with a written submission on data and methodology.

All written components are meant to support the research paper for Political Systems in East Asia. Specific guidelines will be provided by the instructor. Depending on the final number of students enrolled, either one-on-one or small group sessions will be conducted with the instructor for research proposal presentations. The class will not meet regularly during the second section. Scheduling for these consultations and the second section will be determined in the first few weeks of class.

Reading list

All reading and supplementary material will be provided by the instructor. A completed syllabus will be provided by the first class.

In addition, students are required to independently research literature on their research and presentation topics.
