Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of this module is to explore some of the differences and similarities in cross-border Asian migrations within the region in order to critically appraise the roles played by global inequalities and migration policies in conjunct with the socially structuring forces of gender, ethnicity, and social class. The course is organized thematically, discussing various migratory flows and their consequences through examples from various contexts in Asia, thus providing a comparative angle. Examples from different societies within East- and Southeast Asia will be used, with special emphasis on Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, and South-Korea.
Examination topics
As you will need to engage in in-class discussions for this course, be sure to do your readings before you come to class. 15% of the grade will be determined by your participation in these discussions. A list of the required readings will be posted on Moodle. You may expect 3-5 readings each week.
You will be asked to submit 3 short papers (1500 words, accounting for 15% of the grade each) making up a total of 45% of the grade. Each of these short papers will be an academically sound reflection on questions set by the lecturer.
The remaining 40% of the grade will be earned by submitting a final paper (length: 5000 words). You are free to choose your own topic, wherein the latter is subject to prior approval by the lecturer.
