Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this course is to familiarize students with the basics of quantitative and qualitative research methods in the social sciences. This course will enable participants to formulate their own research questions, design their study, as well as familiarize them with methods of data collection, description, analysis and interpretation. Moreover, the final unit will be devoted to support students in their writing by offering advice on how to structure their manuscripts, and by covering the basics of proper usage of citation and paraphrasing. The course is open to EcoS students who have identified an area of interest they would like to pursue for their Master’s thesis, but who have not yet started working on their thesis.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grading: 10%-Participation; 60%- Homework; 30%-Final Paper (Research Proposal)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

By the end of this course, students should have gained a broad knowledge of different methodological approaches to gaining knowledge through the systematic study of the social, and be able to discern and apply various research methods. Throughout the semester, students will be asked to actively participate by delivering homework as well as taking part in the in-class exercises. Finally, students are asked to deliver a research proposal of 2500-3000 words in length.
