Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of this course is to introduce broad range of topics related to traditional Korean society and culture as depicted in unofficial Korean history sources written by literati of the Joseon period (1392-1910). Unlike the official historiography (dynasty annals sillok, Munheon bigo etc.), literati anecdotes offer a more personal perspective on various issues, which were in the official sources rarely mentioned. The best example of this genre, Yu Mongin’s (15591623) collection of miscellaneous stories Eou yadam, provides an interesting survey of unofficial stories concerning slaves, prostitutes, divination, ghosts, shamans or geomancy in the eyes of high ranking Confucian official.
Topics of the lectures (1 hour each):
1-2) Yadam genre and Korean historiography
3-4) Yu Mongin: his life and works
5-6) Social groups: slaves and prostitutes
7-8) Divination and Korean religions
9-10) Ghosts and shamans.
