Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is designed to make students find a research interest in dealing with the complex situation of the 1980s in the PRC. Three main areas of development will be covered: the cultural, the political and the economic. The seminar is aimed at discussing the importance of the initial years of reform in the PRC for what we are observing in terms of an on going transformation process today.
Assessment and permitted materials
Students will have to hand in homework which is going to be 40% of their final mark. Their oral presentation will make up for 30% of their final mark (PPT presentation requested!), and their regualr and lively participation in class will make up for another 30%.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
This seminar is aimed at developing major skills needed for writing an MA thesis. This implies the identification of a research area, the defining of a research question and the search for as well as the work with multiple sources of information. For students who do not know Chinese, there is ample opportunity to work on English and German language sources. Students who know Chinese are requisted to read Chinese language materials and work on them.
Examination topics
The seminar is focused on a close reading of texts both in the sense of primary sources from the 1980s and in the sense of academic texts written on the 1980s at the time as well as later. Students are requested to present their interpretations of texts in the form of original research on certain questions, but mainly in the form of book reviews.
