Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Given the illiberal political developments in China over the last decade, it has become an imperative for us to understand contemporary Chinese politics and the Chinese Communist Party's rule from a historical perspective. This course surveys the main events of the centennial history of the Chinese Communist Party from 1921 to 2021. The course will follow a loosely arranged chronological order and at the end of the course, students shall be familiar with the main historical events of the Party, the way it is organized as well as its modes of operation.More info of the lecturer can be found at https://univie.academia.edu/LingLi.
Assessment and permitted materials
Class activities will consist of discussions, which can also take the form of presentations or debates. Your attendance at each class session is mandatory. Your preparation for discussions before each class is essential for the conduction of the course. You are expected to complete the reading assignments and other research tasks given to you before you come to the class.
Depending on the size of the class, you will be assigned as the main reporter and/or discussant for a number of different topics. Your performance for each assigned task will be evaluated separately, which will be aggregated for your final score.
There will be no separate exams.
The workload of this course is moderate.
The class will NOT admit new students after its 3rd session.
You will not be eligible for the exam if you miss 3 sessions. Absence from class needs to be announced beforehand. Each absence will lead to a discount of your attendance score.
