Aims, contents and method of the course
This course offers a thematic overview of the contemporary Chinese politics, economy and law. Over the course of this series, you will be introduced to the basic features of Chinese politics, economic structure and the structure and development of the legal system. You will also learn the academic approaches to Chinese studies through a close reading and analysis of the representative literature in the field. THE COURSE WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ENGLISH.
Assessment and permitted materials
1. Class preparation, attendance and participation account for 30% of the final grade. You are expected to read all the assignments before class. You will be paired into groups. Each group will lead the discussion of one topic from the syllabus. The discussion shall begin with a summary of the key points raised in the weekly readings, followed by a critical analysis of the texts, including questions for wider class discussion.
2. Final exam consists of an oral exam and a closed written exam. The oral exam is scheduled in Week 13 (Jan. 11 and 14). You will deliver a commentary essay based on one of the required reading materials of your own choice. The essay shall include a short summary of the main arguments presented in the selected reading material, your opinion about the arguments and the information that supports your opinion. The presentation shall take 6 minutes in total. The written exam is scheduled in Week 14 (Jan. 21). You will be required to answer a number of essay questions at class. The written exam is a closed exam. Consultation with any reference materials either in print or electronic forms is strictly prohibited. There will be no make-up exam except for extreme circumstances and documented illness with medical notes.
