Aims, contents and method of the course
Assessment and permitted materials
Course requirements and grading1. The course will be conducted on-site through face-to-face communication. Your attendance to each class and participation in regular discussions is mandatory.
2. No prior knowledge of China or the Chinese language is required.
3. Your performance consists of three parts. 1) Attendance. 2) Pre-class preparation. You are required to read all reading assignments before coming to the class. Questions will be asked during the class regarding these assignments. The quality of the answer that you provide, if called upon, will be used for the evaluation of your performance. 3) Research project. At the beginning of the course, you will be asked to decide on a topic for your research project. Your research plan will be discussed in the class, which shall assist you to prepare for your research. Your final research product will be presented orally at the class and/or in writing depending on the circumstance.
4. Grading scheme
Regular attendance - 10%
Pre-class preparation (reading assignments) – 40%
Research project – 50%

This course addresses three topics, as indicated in the course title, all of which are associated with the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s “dilemma”. Succession will connect the past with the present, discussing succession rules and practices in imperial palaces and behind the high walls of Zhongnanhai. Under the topic of protest, we will discuss the democratic movement in 1989 side by side with the series of protests in Hong Kong in 2014-2020.
