Aims, contents and method of the course

Gegen Ende der 1960er Jahre etablierte sich eine Generation von Musikern in der britischen Rockmusikszene, welche die „einfachen“ musikalischen Strukturen des amerikanischen Rocks mit „komplexeren“ Elementen anderer Musikrichtungen wie Jazz oder Klassik „bereichern“ wollten: Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull und andere lösten eine Wende zur Kunstmusik innerhalb der Rockwelt aus, welche die Rocklandschaft verändern sollte: Neue Instrumente wie Synthesizer oder Querflöten wurden eingeführt, die Songs und Instrumentalstücke wurden länger und Komplexität gewann als musikalisches Merkmal an Bedeutung.
In der Vorlesung soll der historische Werdergang dieses Rockstils thematisiert werden, der heute in der Literatur unter den vagen Begriffen „progressive rock“ oder „art rock“ subsumiert wird. Darüber hinaus sollen im Seminar Begriffe wie Gesamtkunstwerk, Konzeptalbum, Technologie und Psychedelic diskutiert werden, die im Zusammenhang mit den oben erwähnten Gruppen in den Rockdiskurs eingeführt wurden.
