Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course will focus on the operatic production of George Frideric Handel. Due to his numerous stages in many significant European musical cities, Handel's operas are exemplary for the differing traditions of secular music theater. Although being born into a protestant context, Handel devoted himself to Italian opera. However, he never seized to combine German, Italian and English elements within it. This course will provide an overview of similarities and differences of Italian opera in different geographical contexts, focussing on a few specific case studies: Hamburg (Almira, 1705), Venice (Agrippina, 1709/10) and London (Rinaldo, 1711 / Giulio Cesare, 1724 / Alcina, 1735).

Students should be introduced to the analysis of poetic and musical structures of Italian Baroque opera through an analysis of their libretti and scores. Furthermore, they should acquire knowledge regarding Handel's operas, their genesis and reception. In the course of the seminar, we will also discuss issues regarding performance practice. An individual presentation and a term paper will be part of the course.
