Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The tragic entanglement between the "gypsy" Carmen and the soldier Don José has entered the cultural memory with the publication of Prosper Merimées novella in 1847. This is of course largely due to Georges Bizets opera (1875); but the story of Carmen can be considered as a modern myth which warrants constant retelling - not only on the operatic stage, but also in adaptations like Otto Preminger's "Carmen Jones", Mark Dornford-May's "U-Carmen" or Robert Townsends "Carmen: A HipHopera", and movie versions directed by, among others, Charles Vidor, Francesco Rosi, Carlos Saura, Jean-Luc Godard or Vicente Aranda. What makes this figure so constantly fascinating, which of her aspects are yet to be discovered?
