Aims, contents and method of the course

As the title states this course is meant as an introduction to the fundamentals of working in humanities/science. PLEASE NOTE: This course will provide an overview over the different 'musicologies' and focus on research in historical musicology.

Objectives:
Students, who finish this course
1. know and understand the requirements for academic/scientific work,
2. are trained in dealing with academic sources,
3. are acquainted with the fundamentals of designing smaller academic studies, and
4. know how to devise and write academic texts

Content:
1. What is science (and humanities in that regard)/scientifc or academic work?
2. dealing with musicological sources (research/critical examination/citation)
3. academic writing

Methods:
Lecture: Introduction to the fundamentals by the lecturer
Discussion: Interactive debate of different topic areas, short presentations and feedback
Practical work: Exercises at home (homework)

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to finish the course, students have to
1. be present and participate actively (3 absences are allowed)
2. hand in homeworks on time
3. hold a short, 10-minute presentation (topics will be communicated during the course)
4. complete a test at the end of the semester

Those who you attend the first session and don't deregister in time will receive a grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Eligibility requirements:
Having passed the Introduction and Orientation Phase (Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase, StEOP)

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE COURSE WILL BE IN GERMAN!
so there is another implicit requirement: somewhat fluent German.

Aims, contents and method of the course

As the title suggests, this course is meant as an introduction to the fundamental techniques and tools of working academically. Please note that this course will give an overview of different 'musicologies' before focusing on the skills relevant to historical musicology.

Objectives:
Students who complete this course
1. know and understand the requirements for academic work,
2. are trained in dealing with academic sources of musicology,
3. are acquainted with the fundamentals of designing smaller written essays and texts, and
4. know how to devise and write academic texts

Content:
1. What is scholarship (with an emphasis on the Humanities) and an academic way of working?
2. familiarity and ease with musicological sources (research/critical examination/citation)
3. academic writing

Methods:
Lecture: Introduction to the fundamentals by the lecturer
Discussion: Interactive debate of different topics
Practical work: Exercises in class and at home (homework)

Assessment and permitted materials

In order to complete the course successfully, students are required to
1. attend regularly (3 absences permitted)
2. complete smaller exercises as home-learning which should be handed in in good time ,
3. give a 10-minute short oral presentation (the topics will be discussed in the course of the seminar)
4. pass a written test at the end of the semester.

Assessment:
The final grade will be based on a scoring system.
Every individual task will be awarded with points. The total number of points will eventually be converted into standard grades.
An explanation will be given at the start of the semester.

Examination topics

The written assessment will provisionally consist of three parts: (1) short questions about bibliographical tools (dictionaries, databases); (2) an evaluation of a written source (text, graphic); (3) proofreading of a few pages of an academic text (typos, citation methods, formatting)
