European music lexicography of the 17th and 18th centuries.
In this lecture, students will be introduced to fundamental works of 17th and 18th century European music lexicography in their interrelation with contemporary music didactic literature. Following the terminological explanations in the appendices of music didactic works such as those by J. A. Herbst (Musica Moderna Prattica, 1658), G. Falck (Idea Boni Cantoris I, 1688), D. Speer (Grund= richtiger ... Unterricht, 1697), J. S. Beyer (Primæ Lineæ Musicæ Vocalis, 1703) or J. G. Ahle (Kurze / doch deutliche Anleitung zu der lieblich= und löblichen Singekunst, 1704) and others, it was finally Th. B. Janowka with his Clavis ad Thesaurum Magnæ Artis Musicæ (1701), S. de Brossard (Dictionaire de Musique, 1703/05) and J. G. Walther (Musicalisches Lexicon 1732), who founded the independent music lexicographical tradition, which was continued by further authors such as J. Grassineau (A Musical Dictionary, 1740), J.- J. Rousseau (Dictionnaire de Musique, 1768), E. L. Gerber (Historisch-biographisches Lexikon der Tonkünstler, 1790-92, resp. Neues historisch-biographisches Lexikon der Tonkünstler, 1812-14) or H. Chr. Koch (Musikalisches Lexikon, 1802). In addition to the detailed presentation of the mentioned music encyclopedias and the general information about the factual terms and/or biographical articles contained therein, the aim is to explain the development of performance, character, tempo, dynamic or instrumentation indications, genres, musical-rhetorical figures, etc., using the example of some selected terms, and to place them in a relationship with the practically oriented explanations in the music-didactic works of that time.
The aim of the lecture is, on the one hand, to familiarize students with historical music lexicography and the development of musical terminology in the 17th and 18th centuries, and on the other hand, to understand the presented music historical writings in their entirety as the first, virtually inexhaustible source of information.
