Aims, contents and method of the course

The Finale of Anton Bruckner’s four-movement Ninth Symphony (1887–96) and the five movements of Gustav Mahler’s Tenth Symphony (1910) are among the most renowned unfinished works in the history of music. In this seminar, we will gain an overview of the philological work with the surviving original manuscripts, the various attempts to create performance versions, and the associated controversies. In order to ascertain the plausibility and appropriateness of the performance versions, it is necessary to conduct a detailed examination of the late style of both composers and to engage in a discourse on the aesthetic and ethical issues associated with “thinking further” such fragments. In the present era, a comprehensive indexing and documentation of the sources and performance versions, which are largely available in digital format, is possible, thereby enabling detailed comparisons and a fascinating introduction to the field of editing techniques, stylistic analysis, and performance practice.
The seminar includes an excursion to the music collection of the Austrian National Library, where the majority of the manuscripts of the two works under discussion are stored.
The presentation topics may include comparative studies of the two works and their genesis, individual aspects of the compositional process of one of the two works, an introduction to individual performance versions or their comparison based on selected movements or passages, fundamental reflections on musical fragments and their significance in music history (also based on comparisons with Mozart, Schubert, Schönberg, Berg, and others), methods of digital documentation and source comparisons, or an analysis of recordings of different performance versions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Presentation as part of the seminar and preparation of a seminar paper or Bachelor’s thesis. Active participation in the seminar discussions and preparation of work assignments (reading texts, listening to recordings, etc.).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance at at least five of the seven seminar blocks. Grading is based on the following key: 1/4 presentation, 1/4 participation and work assignments, 1/2 seminar paper/bachelor’s thesis.

Examination topics

Independent preparation of a presentation topic, presentation in the seminar and preparation of a written version as a seminar paper or Bachelor’s thesis.
