Aims, contents and method of the course

Presentation and comparison of theories of syllable structure and of the relationship between syllables and segments from the 1960's to the present.

Assessment and permitted materials

Regular participation, talk with handout.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

As regard content, the participants will become acquainted with the properties of syllable structure in general and with the syllable structures of individual languages in particular. This will be achieved primarily by a comparison of the currently available theories. Formally, they are to learn how to plan a handout and hold a comprehensible talk on a sub-area of the material (e.g. one theory of syllable structure or the syllable structure of one language).
