Dennoch gibt es bis heute noch keine universal gültige Definition von Angewandter Ethnomusikologie. Die Study Group on Applied Ethnomusicology des ICTM (International Council for Traditional Music) schlägt vor, angewandte Ethnomusikologie sei „the approach guided by principles of social responsibility, which extends the usual academic goal of broadening and deepening knowledge and understanding toward solving concrete problems and toward working both inside and beyond typical academic contexts“ (Webseite: http://ictmusic.org/group/applied-ethnomusicology).
Mein Anliegen ist, im Rahmen dieser Lehrveranstaltung die Geschichte, Ansätze und Methoden der angewandten Ethnomusikologie anhand von Beispielen vorzustellen, da in Österreich nur an der Uni Wien Lehrveranstaltung mit diesem Fokus angeboten wird, wohingegen dies in den USA längst Teil des Studiums ist. Die vorgeschlagene Lehrveranstaltung hat folgende Schwerpunkte:
1) Was ist angewandte Ethnomusikologie? Vorgänger, Geschichte und heutige Perspektiven
2) Wie macht man angewandte Ethnomusikologie? Forschungsansätze, Methoden und Ethik
3) Warum ist angewandte Ethnomusikologie wichtig? Kolonialismus, Kolonialität und die mögliche Rolle der Ethnomusikologie in asymmetrischen Machtverhältnissen
4) Welche Diskussionen gibt es heute in der angewandten Ethnomusikologie? Debatten über Definitionen und Bezeichnungen, die (In-)Effizienz akademischer Strukturen und die Notwendigkeit von Zusatzqualifikationen für das Feld, usw.
