Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As the title states this course is meant as a chance to experience research in the field of music psychology/systematic musicology first hand.

In this course, students, in small teams, will conduct an empirical study on their own with ongoing communication and feedback during the sessions. The results will be presented via a short talk in the course and documented in a short article.

Objectives:
Students, who finish this course
1. know how to design, conduct, and evaluate an empirical study,
2. know the methodological fundamentals of empirical, quantitative research in (systematic) musicology, and
3. learn how to disseminate scientific contents in written (article) and oral form (presentation).

Content:
1. Fundamentals of statistics (overview over the basic numbers, quantities, and evaluation methods)
2. Methodological fundamentals (the most common concepts in reference to research in music psychology)
3. a quantitative study (question, method, conduction, evaluation, interpretation)
4. dissemination (preparing and "publishing" of the results)

Methods:
lecture: Introduction to the fundamentals by the lecturer
practical work: students themselves will conduct a small empirical study
presentation: (short) oral presentation of the results by the students
