Aims, contents and method of the course
The Eurovision Song ContestThis course explores the politics and poetics of the Eurovision Song Contest, the world’s largest and longest-running annual televised popular music show. As a cultural ritual, the contest encourages both national and pan-European identities while promoting a vision of a modern Europe (wherever its boundaries might be drawn) that is peaceful, democratic, multicultural, sexually liberated, and technologically advanced. At the same time, the ESC seems to exemplify the most commercial and derivative trends of Europop, a genre many listeners, critics, and scholars dismiss. What can this song contest and its music, performers, and fans tell us about European identities and communities today?
