Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

An introduction to the theory of language change is offered, based on an overview of the history of research. All levels of system-internal change are taken into consideration (phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic change, change in the lexicon), as well as cross-systemic processes (grammaticalization in the first place) and system-external factors (chiefly pragmatics, style, sociolinguistic parameters, language contact).

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Primary goal: Language change will be presented as a multifactorial phenomenon whose variegation is a challenge for descriptive and explanatory linguistic models. Along selected examples the epistemological problems of the assessment of diachronic processes will be discussed, with particular regard to interdisciplinary aspects.
Secondary goals:
Understanding of the basic mechanisms of language change and their status as evidence and explanandum for linguistic theories
Acquisition of basic knowledge of current theories and models of diachronic linguistics
Approaches to a diachronic perspective, which will be deepened in subsequent courses

Examination topics

Oral presentation, enhanced with multimedial equipment (data projector, e-learning platform "Moodle").
