Aims, contents and method of the course
The course offers an overview over the most relevant basic concepts and problems of various sociological theories in terms of their relevance for sociolinguistic/discourse analytic theorizing: what constitutes an "action"; what does "understanding" (Verstehen") mean; what is a social system; which forms of interactional "order" were postulated/investigated by different sociological theories.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course aims at providing students with at deeper understanding of basic sociological concepts which underly many sociolinguistic and discourse analytics theories and thus to enhance students' understanding of these latter theories.
Examination topics
Students read materials which are provided on the e-learning platform and discuss and apply concepts and theories to select data during classes.
