Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is to continue the outline of Hittite language structure part I held in WS 2009/10, but participation in this previous course is not required. Instead, students with a basic knowledge of Hittite or beginners who are willing to catch up with the other students are also welcome (a script of the previous course is available).
The course is to deepen the knowledge of Hittite grammar, vocabulary, and Hittite cuneiform. By reading selected Hittite textes of different genres (such as annals, letters, narratives, ritual texts and prayers) the students will be familiarized with the Hittite textual tradition and its cultural background.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written test at the end of the term.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course aims to extend the students' knowledge of Hittite grammar, vocabulary and Hittite cuneiform and to develop further reading and translation skills including knowledge of Hittite cuneiform. Besides, it aims to familiarize the students with the Hittite tradition and its cultural background.

Examination topics

Reading and linguistic analysis of Hittite texts, exercises to various grammatical features, vocabulary and cuneiform script. Lecture with background information to Hittite culture and history, introduction into topics of Hittitological studies.
