Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The class will give an overview over the most important compound types of Proto-Indo-European and their development in the IE languages with an introduction into the basic terminology and problems of compounding. Here we will focus on basic concepts of general linguistics and typology. Students should have basic training in morphology and historical linguistics; basic knowledge of Ancient IE languages such as Latin, Sanskrit and Ancient Greek is helpful but not mandatory.

The aim of the class is to make students acquainted with the basic problems of composition in general and specially with the various types of IE compounds.

Examination topics

Lecture with handouts; reference to further literature; in order to get a certificate students will have to pass a written exam on the content of the lecture.
