Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Survey of the origins of writing (hieroglyphs, cuneiform script, etc.), development of syllabic and alphabetic systems. Examination of the graphemic inventories of IE languages with regard to their suitability for the respective phonemic inventory, against the backdrop of their origin, on the basis of examples (probably Devanagari, the Greek alphabet, alphabets in Italy, Germanic runes).

Assessment and permitted materials

Written test at the end of the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The aim of this course is to enable the students to analyse graphemic systems and their relationship to the phonemic system they represent.
