Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will introduce classic and recent theoretical approaches to first language acquisition and will also cover empirical findings on the acquisition of different levels of language. After discussing nativist and constructivist approaches, and theoretical issues like the logical problem of language acquisition, the continuity assumption, poverty of the stimulus and domain-specificity of acquisition mechanisms, we will focus on language acquisition at different levels, reviewing recent findings and models of phonological, lexical, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic development.

Assessment and permitted materials

Grades are going to be based on participation in the discussions, short (15 minutes) oral presentations and on one of the topics in the seminar, and a final paper (12-15 pages) giving a critical review of a selected topic in language acquisition.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminar will be based lectures and on a selected list of papers form classical and current language acquisition literature. Students are expected to read the assigned papers from class to class.
