The seminar is taking place every other week, which is why the units will last for three hours. This will allow for focused discussions. Performance evaluation is based on three tasks: (1) ‘minutes’ of a unit, (2) presentation of a suitable topic, (3) writing up of seminar-paper (10-15 pages).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Regular (unexcused absence is possible once; further abscences can be sanctioned with additional tasks) and active participation.
All three tasks have to be completed successfully.

The goal of this seminar is for students to become familiar with the sociolinguistic perspective on power (i.e. the relevant literature, debates and methods). A further goal is to develop an argument on their own in the form of a presentation and seminar paper and to generally become aware of the various constellations of power and the inherent role of language.
