Aims, contents and method of the course

The course offers an overview of the grammar of Vedic Sanskrit with emphasis on the development from Indoiranian and PIE. The most important phonetic developments as well as selected categories of the noun and verb will be covered (focus lies on morphology and morphosyntax, sentence syntax will not be covered). The detailed semester program will be announced on the Moodle platform. The material will be taught via oral lecture using detailed handouts, which will be uploaded to Moodle, as will audio recordings of the units. Further secondary literature for the deepening of individual diachronic developments will be announced in the course of the semester.

The aim of the course is on the one hand to prepare students for reading Vedic texts and on the other hand to lay the foundations for independent work with Vedic text material in the context of linguistic-historical questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam at the end of the semester. The handouts of the course and the recommended secondary literature may be used in the examination. In the exam, students should explain basic linguistic-historical developments using Vedic example forms.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Text answers are expected (no multiple-choice questions). There will be four questions in which a total of 32 points can be achieved. Scale of marks: 32-28 very good, 27-23 good, 22-15 satisfactory, 14-6 sufficient, 5-0 not sufficient.

Examination topics

The material presented in the lecture will be examined, previous knowledge is not required.
