Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we will theoretically discuss and empirically analyse various aspects of the discursive construction of 'crises' in politics and the media. The basis for this will be a discourse-analytical perspective introduced at the beginning of the semester. Empirically, we will look at a range of text types/genres, including report, reportage, commentary, political speech, press release, interview and social media posting. These types of data will be examined using theoretical concepts such as populism, legitimation, interdiscursivity, mediatisation or securitisation and empirically analysed in terms of linguistic/semiotic dimensions such as argumentation, blame avoidance, metaphor, nomination, attribution and multimodality. Other concepts and levels of linguistic realisation can be included if they become relevant in the data.

Assessment and permitted materials

Oral part: 1.) Active participation throughout the semester (10%), 2.) Literature presentation on a theoretical approach (crisis communication, securitisation, etc.) alone or in a group (15%), 3.) Short presentation of the planned written paper/planned research project (5%)

Written part: written paper (MA: 15–20 pages, BA thesis: approx. 30 pages) (70%). All written work will be checked with Turnitin for text similarities ("plagiarism check").

Please note: If you visit this course in the BA studies (module BA-M11) and submit a BA thesis which is accepted, you will get additional ECTS credits (10 ECTS in total).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The minimum requirement for a positive assessment is the writing of a term paper (Seminararbeit) or Bachelor's thesis according to the requirements of the instructors and the (co-)moderation of a course session (presentation). Attendance is compulsory; two unexcused absences are permitted.
The written work is taken into account to 70% in the assessment of the course, the oral performance to a total of 30%.

Examination topics

Examination of relevant literature and application to a topic of the student's own choice (in consultance with the lecturer) within an oral presentation and the written term paper. The paper's focus can be either theoretical, methodological, or empirical.
