Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Selected poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym and his contemporaries, as well as supplementary reading on the interpretation and historical context of Daffydd's work. Poetry will be read in the original Middle Welsh; supplementary reading may be in English, Welsh or German.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Provide students with the tools needed to translate and analyse the poetry of Dafydd ap Gwilym and his contemporaries. Become familiar with various features of medieval Welsh poetry written in the cywydd metre, including cynghanedd, cymeriad, sangiad and dyfalu.

Examination topics

Students will study and translate poems by Dafydd ap Gwilym. Attention will be paid to the imagery and content of the works, as well as the use of alliteration, rhyme and other ornamentation. Class discussion will centre on the major themes of Dafydd's poetry and their relationship to the work of contemporary Welsh and European poets.
Final Evaluation: There is no final examination. Students will be evaluated based on translations and in-class presentations.
