Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Applied Linguistics investigates into manifestations of language in social contexts. Therefore, applied linguists need to be familiar with social and cultural theory and the diverse ways those theories construct society and social sciences. In this course, we discuss different approaches, paradigms, terminologies and methodologies of socio-cultural origin specifically with regard to their socio-linguistic applicability. The range of potential theories includes interpretive, phenomenological, constructivist, system-theoretical, post-structuralist, critical, feminist/queer, culture-anthropological theories and cultural studies. The actual selection is done in accordance with the participants of the course.
Assessment and permitted materials
1. Co-preparation and chairing in a session about a selected text of social or cultural theory
2. Short written text on the topic of the co-preparated session (1-2 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Apart from the oral and scriptal records mentioned above, a regular presence, reading of the discussed texts and active participation in discussions is required.
