Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Contemporary Grammatical Theories: Semantics & Syntax

This class provides an introduction to, and comparison of, different formal models of grammar, as they have developed over the past four decades, wth special attention to the role of semantics in them.
Theories to be discussed will probably include (but the list is open):
- categorial grammar
- various versions of phrase structure grammars (GPSG, HPSG, sign-based PSG)
- Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG)
- transformational grammar (Government & Binding, Minimalism)

We will proceed roughly chronologically, so as to best appreciate the connections and relations between the various theories.

Note: On July 17.-20. the departments of African studies and of linguistics are co-hosting the annual international LFG conference here in Vienna. This class will provide students interested in attending with the prerequisite knowledge of the basic theory.
