Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The proseminar aims at building a critical knowledge of the history of the ancient Greek language from Linear B texts to the Classical period. We will discuss the historical circumstances of our earliest sources for the Greek language, especially poetry, and how they affect linguistic study; key aspects of Greek dialectology and of Greek historical phonology and morphology; the language of Homer. Students will be expected to do some reading ahead of the sessions (normally 20 to 40 pages).
Assessment and permitted materials
Depending on the overall number of participants, each student will give one or two short oral presentations either on a text or on a specific problem (further details and options will be discussed in class). This is in addition to the final written examination consisting of a historico-linguistic commentary of small portion of Homeric text. Aids to be used will vary depending on the student's background knowledge of Greek.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
60% of the maximum mark is enough for a positive assessment. The oral presentations must show critical thinking. The fostering of a collegial atmosphere in the seminar is encouraged and valued. The final assessment will take into account the background knowledge at the beginning of the Proseminar.
