Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
An introduction to the linguistic study of word structure is offered on a typological basis, illustrated with examples from a broad range of genealogically heterogeneous languages. Setting out from the fundamental concepts of formal analysis of complex word forms and the delimitation of morphology with respect to phonology, syntax and the lexicon, the following topics will be treated systematically: parts of speech, grammatical categories, inflection, derivation and compounding. These issues will be confronted with cross-componential phenomena like language acquisition, language contact and variation, with emphasis on specific properties of morphological processes such as productivity, regularity and iconicity
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam at the end of the term
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Primary goal: Morphology as a basic component of grammar will be presented in its relation to the other components of the language system. By means of selected examples the typological dimension of the parameter word structure will be outlined, with special regard to functional criteria.
Secondary goals:
Understanding of the cognitive foundations of morphological processes and their status in a general framework of grammatical theory
Acquisition of basic knowledge of current theories and models of linguistic morphology
Approaches to a diachronic perspective on morphological change, which will be deepened in a subsequent course
