Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Linguistic diversity and communication between persons of different linguistic background is a central feature of communication in many institutions in the public sector (e.g. education, health services, law), in private companies or in multi- and transnational organisations (e.g. in the European Union). Here, institutional communication is situated at the interface between individuals and society.
This seminar introduces issues of multilingualism and institutional communication from a number of perspectives. It draws on concepts from sociolinguistics, multilingualism research and discourse analysis. Theoretical concepts as well as methodological and empirical issues of research in institutional contexts such as school, university, health services, international companies, law and politics will be discussed.
Methods:
theoretical input, reading of basic literature, discussion of literature and empirical evidence (transcripts), short oral presentations, small in-class and homework tasks, excursion, designing an individual research project for the written assignments.
Aims:
- students acquire an understanding of central concepts of sociolinguistics, multilingualism research and discourse analysis that are relevant for the research field
- students acquire the ability to conduct an empirical research project in the field of multilingualism and institutional communication (written assignment)
