Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Applied Linguistics investigates into manifestations of language in social contexts. Therefore, applied linguists need to be familiar with social and cultural theory and the diverse ways those theories construct society and social sciences. In this course, we discuss different approaches, paradigms, terminologies and methodologies of socio-cultural origin specifically with regard to their socio-linguistic applicability. The range of potential theories includes interpretive, phenomenological, constructivist, system-theoretical, post-structuralist, critical, feminist/queer, culture-anthropological theories and cultural studies. The actual selection is done in accordance with the participants of the course.

PLEASE NOTE: The course will take place face-to-face if circumstances allow. For students who cannot participate face-to-face, the possibility is provided to participate (live) via the tool Collaborate (via Moodle). Should COVID-19 prevention require it, the course will go online completely.

Update 19.11.2021: Due to the current prevention measures of the government the course will be held in distance learning mode (online) from now on (at least until 12.12.2921). The online room is located on Moodle.

Assessment and permitted materials

1. Co-preparation and chairing in a session about a selected text of social or cultural theory
2. Short written text on the topic of the co-preparated session (1-2 pages)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Apart from the oral and scriptal records mentioned above, a regular presence, reading of the discussed texts and active participation in discussions is required.

PLEASE NOTE: During the home-learning phase in the context of COVID-19 protection the oral presentation will be substituted by scripts which are provided on Moodle. The course discussion takes place in a Moodle chat (at the announced time slots).
