Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The course introduces the most important methodological trends in Indo-European studies of the 19th and 20th centuries, which still form the basis of recent research problems in the field. Emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of the PIE phoneme system (incl. laryngeal theory), root theory and accent and ablaut theory; furthermore, the reconstructive method (phylogenetic theory, lexicostatistics) as well as connections between language history and cultural history are discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Written exam at the end of the semester (text questions, no multiple choice).
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students should be able to classify the topics covered in the course in terms of the history of science, assess the relevance of the respective approaches to comparative linguistic history research, and actively apply subject-specific terminology.
Examination topics
Content of the course based on the presentation, the materials provided on Moodle.
