Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Inner speech is a phenomenon that most people experience to some degree. Alderson-Day and Fernyhough (2015) describe it as “the subjective experience of language in the absence of overt and audible articulation”. It is subjective, not always conscious, and therefore inherently challenging to study. This requires an interdisciplinary approach. This class will, therefore, provide perspectives from philosophy, linguistics, and cognitive psychology and discuss, how each discipline contributes to our understanding of inner speech. This class is supposed to give students the opportunity to explore the phenomenon in a way that suits their personal interests. They may receive guidance at different stages in the writing process and are encouraged to discuss unfinished and imperfect work.At the end of the semester, students should know and understand the key terms and concepts related to inner speech, know and understand the key research methods to investigate inner speech and be able to apply different perspectives to the phenomenon and a related topic of their choice. On this topic of choice, students should write a seminar paper (literature review, theoretical paper, or experiment proposal) that meets academic criteria.
